Blogging – So what’s the big deal?

It’s only over the last ten years that blogs (from the original term “web logs”) came into existence. And, only in the last couple of years, has the marketing power of these unique internet tools begun to be explored.

Blogging can be good for your business; they help you build better customer relationships and bring more traffic to your website. Your blog can be customized and linked to look like another page of your original site. The big benefit is that you can add content (text and images) whenever you want, by yourself, for free.

For some, a blog is no more than an online diary. However, many businesses are taking them more seriously much to their advantage. Here are some very practical, bottom-line reasons to start and maintain a blog.

Improve customer service. Blogs can answer customer’s questions directly and publicly. And it’s almost a guarantee that if one customer is asking a question, others have the same one. This can improve, or replace, the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page of your website.

Provide up to date information. You probably already spend time staying current on what’s going on in your industry. By passing that information on to customers, you are doing them a service as well as establishing yourself as a credible expert in your field.

Increase your website’s search engine ranking. Use keywords (phrases that are likely to be entered in a Google search) in your entries and link back to your website. This is the same as adding new content to your site. Adding fresh, keyword rich content helps you get on that coveted first page of Google results.

Passive income opportunities. If your blog attracts a lot of traffic you may be able to interest advertisers. You may also consider becoming an affiliate to companies like Amazon.com to promote books or other products on your site. If you sign up as an affiliate and place specially coded links on your blog, the sales generated by visitors clicking and purchasing will net you a commission. Passive income is always welcome.

Save money on website updates. You may have an “Events” or “Press Release” page to notify your clients of new products/services/schedules, which needs regular updating. On a blog, you can post the changes yourself and save money. You can also add new product announcements, new images, tips or how-tos and much more…all at no cost.

Once you start, try to post regularly…if your blog is good and people come back for more, it is not wise to disappoint them with no new postings. An outdated blog can actually work against you. Write several postings at one sitting on your computer and then add them one at a time over several weeks (or you can post-date them, and have them post automatically over time). Make it fun, make it authentic, and make it informative.
